There are at least 15 major agate-producing areas in
Brazil. 12 of these are located in the 5 most southeastern
states of the country,
Rio Grande do Sul, immediately
north of Uruguay, being the best known. Other areas
include
Santa Catarina, Paraná, Sao Paolo, and Minas
Gerais
. Two other areas are in the state of Bahia in east
central Brazil and another located in the state of
Roraima
in the extreme northwest. Polyhedroid Agates come
exclusively from
Paraiba. Agates were discovered in the
late 1920's by a geologist named B.V. Freyburg with the
Geological Survey of Argentina. Current laws in Brazil
prohibit the export of unfinished agate
The agates from Brazil are mostly mined from
decomposed volcanic ash and basalt from the late
Permian age (248-275 million years ago) In Rio Grande
do Sul the "agate mines" are normally just plowed fields in
which loose agates are found and collected. Brazilian
agates are very colorful stones with some of the most
beautiful inclusion and structures imaginable. Agate is
very hard and takes an excellent polish.
Sadly, most of the market for Brazilian agates is for the
"dyed" versions of these stones. When you see a pink,
teal, purple or green agate it is dyed not natural. We have
a few dyed bookend sets, but prefer to deal only in
natural agates. We purchase some cut agates from Brazil,
ones with the bottoms cut flat for display or
cathedrals(man made cement type coatings).

Unique Reversed
Brazilian Agate
$75.00
Quantity Available 1 each
We could not believe our eyes when we cut this one open! The outer layers of
chalcedony which form the outer skin of Brazilian agates is not present in this
specimen. It has a coarse grained quartz crystal outer perimeter with hematite
seepage color influence. The central section of this is chalcedony with a clear
quartz Drusy vug. There are calcite water level marks and distributed lines of
calcite or zeolite in the face. There is also a sagenitic mushroom appearing
formation in the lower face. There are a few rainbow crystals in the outer layer.
This is probably the most unique Brazilian agate we have cut and polished. There
is one small piece of the small sagenitic line into the outer crystal that separated
from the piece during polishing along a natural fracture in the outer crystal layer.
The hematite influence along the sagenitic projections is really special. This one
of a kind treasure measures 4.1 x 2.8 x 2 inches (104 x 71 x 51mm)
and weighs 1.21lb (549g)
Rarely does one find a Brazilian agate without natural fractures or cracks. This one is as perfect as nature allows. There
are no visible fractures on this one! This agate has a blindingly high gloss polished finish as well. The colors are almost a
wispy pastel blend of clear, tan, blue, grey and cream colors with wonderful chalcedony banding and fortification. A very
stunning specimen! This agate half  weighs 3.44lbs (1.57kg) and measures a large 5.1 inch (129mm) wide face, 4.1 inch
(104mm) high face and is 3.1 inches (79mm) deep. This one could produce many slabs, but we think it is stunning just as is.

Brazilian Agate Geode
Nodule
$12.00
Quantity Available 1 each
This very nice Agate geode shows the traditional outer layers of chalcedony banding with quartz crystals in the center
section. The coloring is brown to tan with a bluish grey in the banding. There is a section at the right visible in the 1st photo
that did not get polished because the agate shifted during cutting (an occurrence that happens sometimes when rock
cutting). Still a very nice specimen.
This specimen weighs 0.66lbs (298g) and measures 3.4 x 2.1 x 1.9 inches (87 x 52 x 49mm)

Our preference is to locate the agates whole and cut
and polish them in our shop. We generally do 1/2
nodules or 1/3 cuts with polished faces. We like to find
those inner treasures.

We sell most agates this way, but do from time to time
cut some slabs for sale. You can make many slabs out
of one nodule. Our slabs for sale will normally be cut
and not polished. The 3.4 lb perfect agate listed first
has the most brilliant shine...like glass.
