| RMS Titanic It was the beginning of the twentieth century, a time of optimism and progress. The transatlantic transport of passengers, cargo, and mail was brisk and competitive. In the spirit of this competition, managing director of the White Star Line, J. Bruce Ismay, engaged the Belfast shipbuilding company of Harland & Wolff to build three leviathans that would become the largest moving objects created by man. The three Royal Mail Ships were to be called Olympic, Titanic, and Gigantic. (Not to tempt fate, later the Gigantic's name was changed to Britannic.) The ships were to be virtually identical in size and structure, but Titanic was to be the true shining star. The Titanic was one of the largest passenger cruise ship at its time in 1912. It was captained by Edward John Smith. It left England on April 10, 1912 and docked in France and Ireland before setting sail for New York. There were many immigrants on the ship from Ireland who were leaving for New York. She was powered by coal furnaces that were stocked at full heat during the voyage. There were reports of icebergs from other ships including the Caronia and the Baltic. The captain was pressured by Bruce Ismay, the chairman of the White Star Ship Lines to sail full speed ahead despite all the warnings to slow down. The ship struck an iceberg a few hours before April 15, 1912. She was hit on the side of the ship and she started to fill up with water. During this time, women and children are put into life rafts. The bottom of the interior of the ship filled up fast and tipped the boat vertically. It sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912 at 2:30am. RMS Titanic (named by J.Bruce Ismay), was built in March 1909. In May 1911, she was launched, in what was a heavily publicized spectacle. Titanic was designed to be a marvel of modern safety technology and her accommodations were the most modern and luxurious on any ocean. She was 883 feet long (1/6 of a mile), 92 feet wide and weighed 46,328 tons. She was 104 feet tall from keel to bridge, almost 35 feet of which were below the waterline. She was capable of carrying over 3500 people. Unfortunately, at 11:40 p.m on the 14th April 1912, the greatest maritime disaster in history began. During that night of heroism, terror and tragedy, 705 lives were saved, 1502 lives were lost, and many legends were born. |
| In Memory Of Titanic Most of the 211 crew members who survived the Titanic tragedy regarded this pin given to them by the White Star Line Company as one of their most prized possessions for the rest of their lives. |
