Vanadinite is a lead mineral colored by vanadium. Its typical occurrences are orange, bright red,
brown, yellow-brown, yellow, greenish-brown or gray. Crystals may also be multicolored. It may have
the same structure and crystal shape as Apatite with its hair-like or barrel-shaped crystals found in
the oxidized zone of lead deposits. It is a part of a series with two other minerals, pyromorphite and
mimetite. The hexagonal crystals sometimes found in Vanadinite are usually prismatic, but may be
skeletal or cavernous, when found in crust layers.

This mineral was initially described as a chromate by Andres Manuel del Rio, who discovered it in
Mexico in 1801. In 1830, metal vanadium was discovered and Vanadinite got its name.
Vanadinite's high luster and deep colors are a nice appeal to mineral collectors.

Vanadinite has been found in the oxidized zones of lead deposits in the Ural Mountains in Russia;
Transvaal, Tsumb and Namibia in South Africa; Chihuahua in Mexico; and Arizona in the US.
