If you are ever visiting the DuPont Forest (where the movie Hunger Games was filmed), or the Pisgah Forest, or are driving the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway or visiting the Cherokee Village in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina there is one place you should not miss! That is Ernie's Rock Shop in Brevard, North Carolina. Ernie's Rock shop is operated by Linda Roth with her faithful companion "Mia" who will greet you as you enter the store. Mia is a very gentle K-9 assistant who loves people. This wonderful rock shop holds many treasures and surprises for rockhounds and collectors of all ages. The shop has been operating for 27 years now. It was opened in 1989 by Linda and her father, who travelled the world finding rare and beautiful specimens. You can find a very nice selection of rocks, minerals, precious gems, crystals, fossils, geode-cracking and lapidary supplies in their store. If you remember the old time rock shops like those in Deming, New Mexico, and remember the "Geode Kid" you will really like visiting Ernie's Rock Shop! Linda makes some beautiful custom jewelry and does jewelry repairs as well. She has a very special collection of her work on display for sale. Chris and I go to Brevard weekly and we always stop and see Linda to see what exciting treasures she has on display for sale. It's a trip well worth making and there is even room for RV parking! There are parking lots on both sides of the rock shop! You can contact them at erniesrocks@comporium.net If you are planning a visit call Linda to verify she will be open...she follows her hours but there are exceptions...from time to time she has to go to rock shows, rock hunting, an occasional holiday, vacation or social event. |
Stop by and say hello to Linda and Mia! They are 1 mile West of Brevard on Rosman Highway...look for the neon in the window and the green triangular sign on the building! Tell them you found their store on SpiritRock Shop's website! |

Extremely Rare 2.75 lb Columbian Tribal Carved Emerald Owl from Ernie's Rock Shop These specimens were all obtained by Linda's father from a Columbian Mineral Dealer at the Tucson Rock, Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona during the 1980's. Columbian Tribal Art Carvings in an Emerald in matrix stone are difficult to find and are a great investment. These are excellent architectural accents or exclusive gifts for that special someone. Old Stock large A Grade Nephrite Jade cube. This specimen was pulled from Linda's stash of working stock specimens that she collected for many years. Nephrite, is a silicate of calcium and magnesium of the amphibole group. It is a mineral that has a very hard and fibrous crystalline Structure. It is less hard than Jadeite, and when polished it has a soft oil-like appearance. Nephrite was the primary jade used in ancient China until about 1780 when large deposits of Jadeite were discovered in Burma (Miramar). Nephrite is not classified as a mineral, but a variety of the Actinolite-Tremolite series. The white-gray Nephrite is closer to Tremolite in composition, while the green-yellow Nephrite is closer to actinolite. The fibers of Actinolite and Tremolite must be interlocking (provides minerals toughness) for the stone to be called Nephrite. Nephrite Jade is not “carved”. Abrasive tools and grit are used to shape and form Nephrite Jade objects. The quality of Nephrite is based on color and translucency. The most valuable colors are Spinach Green and Imperial White. Translucence is normally found in lighter colors. Off colors such as light spotted greens, greys and pea greens have less value. This piece weighs 21.2 oz or 1.33 lbs (603g) and measures 2.4 x 2.4 x 1.7 to 2.6 inches (6.1 x 6 x 4.5 to 6.6cm) |
