Manganoan Calcite
Manganoan calcite or Manganocalcite is a variety of calcite rich in manganese, which gives the mineral a pink color. It was first reported from the Bansk tiavnica Mining District, Slovak Republic, but is widely distributed around the world, notably at Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico, in the Cave of Swords, Bulgaria and Peru.
Manganoan calcite is sometimes confused with rhodochrosite. The amount of manganese in Manganocalcite varies at different localities. Rhodochrosite cannot be reliably distinguished from kutnahorite or Manganoan calcite by visual examination.
Manganoan Calcite is a Calcium Carbonate with manganese. The more manganese in the mineral, the darker the pink is and even starts to become more red. Since Manganocalcite and Rhodochrosite are both found around manganese fields, mistaken identification of these minerals is easily made in the field.
Rhodochrosite on the other hand is a Manganese Carbonate. Distinguishing between Manganoan Calcite and Rhodochrosite is easiest done with the use of an Ultraviolet Light Source. Manganoan Calcite fluoresces..Rhodochrosite does not fluoresce.
