Opalite (other than being a song by Taylor Swift) is a trade name for synthetic opalescent glass and various opal and moonstone simulants. This glass product is also known as sea opal or opal moonstone. Opalite has a unique ability for light play.
For many years now we have let children “hold the moon in their hands”. This effect occurs when a child holds this in their hand in the natural sunlight an orange glow appears at the bottom of the sphere and it looks like it is glowing right there in their hand …. like holding the moon in their hand.
When Opalite glass is placed against a dark background, it appears to have a blue color. When placed against a light background, it is milky white with an orange or pink glow. Since it is glass, it may sometimes contain air bubbles or swirls, an after-effect of the forming process.
