Description
A rare hexagonal Sapphire Corundum Crystal from Transvaal with flat basal pinacoid terminations and textured surfaces composed of many microscopic crystal faces. Transvaal was a province of South Africa from 1910 until 1994, when a new constitution subdivided it following the end of apartheid. The name “Transvaal” refers to the province’s geographical location being the lands north of the Vaal River. Its capital was Pretoria, which was also the country’s executive capital. This specimen was collected about 70 years ago by Kenhelm W. Stott Jr. on one of his African Safaris in 1948 or 1949. We procured this from him in February of 1990 and it has been in our personal collection since then..
specimen weighs 1.5 oz (13g) and measures 1.93 x 0.82 x 0.64 inches (4.9 x 2.1 x 1.6 cm)
