Description
Extra Large Mylonite Ore from the Sterling Hill Mine
Mylonite Ore is an ore that has been mylonitized or “stretched” by metamorphic processes. It is a fine-grained, compact metamorphic rock produced by dynamic recrystallization of the component minerals resulting in a reduction of the grain size of the rock. Mylonites can have many different mineral compositions. Classification of Mylonite Ore is based on the textural appearance of the rock.
Mylonites are rocks that have been deformed by a large shear strain in ductile fault zones. This Mylonitized ore (Willemite, Franklinite and Calcite) is from the 750 foot level, close to the zero fault area, in Sterling Hill, Ogdensburg, NJ. The Willemite is a fluorescent green, Calcite red-orange, and the Franklinite is non-fluorescent under shortwave UV light.
These hard to find rare specimens are highly prized by collectors. Photos taken in a blackout box with a Nikon CoolPix L-1 under a “Way Too Cool” 254 nm SW 9-Watt Ultra Violet Lamp. Own an Extra Large RARE Sterling Hill Classic!
