|Sand Selenite Desert Formations
This is a rare specimen of Sand Selenite from Mexico that we procured from an old rock shop in Arizona years ago.
This piece is from our personal collection. This form of Selenite is very difficult to find and we have only run across a
few specimens of this in the last 25 years or so.
This specimen weighs 36.5oz or 2.28lbs (1035g) and measures 4.8 x 4.5 x 4.3 inches (12.4 x 11.5 x 11cm)

Rare Sand Selenite Formation
|Sand Selenite formations are mineral formations that are found on the surface and are
beautiful examples of the earths natural power of the shaping forces of wind, water and
pressure in dry, arid regions. These formations may be called Desert Roses, or other
similar names based upon the shape that is formed. Rarely the formations are found
as unique geometric shaped specimens.
Sand Selenite specimens are crystal-like formations and may produce a rose shape,
multiple plates adjoining at angles, geometric crystalline shapes, or the formations may
look like a cluster of cereal flakes.
Sand Selenite formations take on the color of the sand because Selenite is a fibrous
mineral and fine sand becomes trapped between the fibers as it crystallizes. The
Oklahoma hourglass selenite is an example of the sand forming inside the clear
Most specimens have the sand forming both inside and outside of the selenite. With
some pieces, the formation almost looks like shaped sand structures. Sand Selenite
formations are only found in deserts and are mostly from the Sahara Middle East
Region, Southwest USA and Mexico.
