Angle Plated Quartz is a very uncommon form of quartz that only occurs in the upstate region of South Carolina (Greenville, Pickens and Oconee Counties) and southern North Carolina. Our specimens came from a 33 year old collection from Travelers Rest, Greenville County, South Carolina. Travelers Rest, the northernmost city in Greenville County, is located 10 miles north of Greenville and about 20 miles south of the North Carolina border.
No one is sure how it forms but one idea is that silica is precipitated into cracks in the red clay. Eventually these cracks are filled with micro-crystalline quartz and the “plates” are often encrusted with drusy quartz. It is brittle and porous which is unlike any other form of quartz. Whatever the mode of formation is, these are certainly a striking and rare quartz variety. This fabulously naturally sculptured piece has been sawed into its present exotic slab-like form. We have not seen these for sale in a long time.
